Animation Basics

Using Drawing Tools

This video illustrates how plain shapes such as circles and rectangles can be modified to help create complex shapes, characters and illustrations. It also demonstrates “Fill” (Inside colour) and “Stroke” (Outlines) and how to draw using the brush and paintbucket tools.

Making a Symbol

Symbols are very important when animating. Once you have made something it can be used over and over again and again throughout your animation. This could be anything from shapes characters, environments and much more.

Making Symbols Part 2

More complex symbols can be created to add movement or flashing effects by combining symbols together. An example of this may be to create a set of blinking eyes which is a symbol. This may be added to other symbols such as arms, legs, head and body to create a full character. The full character can then be added to the stage to create a more complete and detailed animation such as a walking scene.

Creating a Tween

A tween is term that is short for “in between”. Tweens are added to the timeline after a symbols has been placed on the stage. Movement can then be added to a symbol at any point on the timeline by selecting keyframes and moving the symbol to where it is required. Once this is done the scene can be tested by playing it back to see how the movement has been applied after created the tween or “in between frame motion”.
